Some of you will probably be wondering who Rockstar are, although it’s more likely that most of you will know due to the controversy that follows them everywhere – If you were to believe news reports they are the biggest threat to mankind as we know it – yet they just keep being successful, growing and giving the public just what they want. They’re responsible for the Grand Theft Auto series, the biggest and most groundbreaking videogame I’ve ever had the pleasure of playing.
Now, with the news from Yahoo, they’ve expanded into the movie making business…
… with a new R-rated documentary, “Sunday Driver.”…on the Universal Media Disc (UMD) format used by Sony’s PlayStation Portable (PSP) entertainment device…
…Produced by Rockstar Games, “Driver” is an all-access documentary film that chronicles the Compton/Watts chapter of California’s low-rider car club, the Majestics. Directed by Carol Strong, the film focuses on a community working together to build the ultimate customized vehicles while struggling to legitimize their lifestyle under close scrutiny of the authorities.
It’s not the only foray into film for them though.
The publisher also licensed Walter Hill’s 1979 classic film “The Warriors” and will release it on UMD on October 3, as well as turning the intellectual property into an M-rated game that ships October 17.
I actually welcome this, I think that Rockstar, in their current form, has unique vision. Anyone who has played the latest few games in the GTA series will see that, they are hugely influenced by the movies and the games are heavily into simulating the idea of an interactive movie. I’d love to see this, and perhaps a call to the local offices in Edinburgh where they actually make GTA might prove fruitful for an advance screener…any GTA staff reading?
