I get pissed off with the way Studios will roll out the sub standard DVD, wait a while until the sales drop off, then release a Special Edition, and often wait for some anniversary year holding back more extras for another release. Most people just wait for the big version anyway.
Yet for those older titles, before the Studios brought in their sales plan, a Special Edition can bring a lot of light to an older movie. When the title is a superb film that really deserved a big release but didn’t really get it, then it’s even better, and the news from JoBlo is that there’s such a release on it’s way.
Dark City is a superb film, a movie that brings us the themes of Matrix in a film noir style with bags of tension, style and a great story, everything Matrix wasn’t. There’s also the cast which pulls out some amazing performances, particularly on the part of Keifer Sutherland who is very different to the other roles he’s played. It also stars Rufus Sewell, William Hurt, Jennifer Connelly, the now recognisable Melissa George and Richard O’Brien.
The hint is at the bottom of the Roger Ebert review:
Note: Ebert did commentary tracks for the original DVD of “Dark City” and the forthcoming 2006 Director’s Cut.
Let’s hope it contains a bunch of cool extras.
