Promise and Typhoon trailers astound

Typhoon.jpgI’ve just witnessed two trailers that are poles apart but both equally as good. Chen Kaige‘s The Promise (Mo gik) and Kwak Kyeong-taek‘s Typhoon (Taepung). Both movies, if you hadn’t guessed, are from the eastern shores and are absolutely jam packed with goodness.

Let’s take the trailer for Typhoon (13.3Mb WMV) courtesy of Kung Fu Cinema. They do have another trailer link, but it doesn’t appear to be working, so you’ll have to work through the awful complexity of this one. Select the Free option for download, wait twenty seconds and then select the link that appears.

The trailer looks full of style and strength, some of those performances look to be really powerful, and there’s great reality based action. By that I mean in total contrast to the trailer for The Promise (62Mb WMV). Actually it’s more of a teaser, or to be exact a banquet as the teaser comes in at a whopping eleven minutes and probably tells most of the story, but it looks stunning. Scene after scene of operatic style beauty. It captured me totally and I was seduced by the visuals.

Both are going straight on my list to watch, and both for totally different reasons. These trailers really do show what Hollywood is lacking. Of course, there’s always the trailer mix factor to consider, but they just look so good it’s hard to imagine the films fall short.
