Hoodwinked Reviews

Hoodwinked PosterThe Hoodwinked reviews are now coming in… and they look as bad as the visual style does… although not as bad as i thought they’d be.

Hoodwinked is a re-telling of little red ridding hood, obviously with a modern and more edgy take. 2 things really jumped out at me in the trailers. First of all… it looked (visually) horrible. I just HATED the style of animation that they went with. No, not everything should be photorealistic, but this thing looks like it was made with 1995 technology.

The second thing that stood out to me was the fact that I didn’t giggle, not even once, during the trailer. Nothing in it appealed at all to me. Madagascar was the first truly horrible 3D animated film I’ve seen… this looks like it COULD be the second. Here’s what some of the critics are saying in their reviews about Hoodwinked:

“Hoodwinked — which is the latest cartoon recycling of that oft-told fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood — may be a bit scrappy-looking, but it’s also pretty funny at times.”
Michael Wilmington, CHICAGO TRIBUNE

“The animation style of Hoodwinked is dated by at least a handful of years, marked by that glassy smoothness that dominated previous generations of CGI.”
Mark Olsen, L.A. WEEKLY

“This animated tale about ‘what really happened’ among the Wolf, Grandma, Red and the Woodsman doesn’t excel in any department, from unspectacular computer animation to routine voice talent.”
Bill Muller, ARIZONA REPUBLIC

“Little Red Riding Hood gets deconstructed in this sub-Shrek bummer, the latest collaboration between computers and cynicism.”
Nathan Lee, NEW YORK TIMES

As of this writing, Hoodwinked is carrying a 44% on Rotten Tomatoes. Not the worst rating in history, but bad is still bad. I have zero interest in seeing this thing… but I will this weekend anyway.
