The sequel to Night Watch (my review), Day Watch, has opened in Russia and broke local records in it’s first week.
According to Kung Fu Cult Cinema:
…took in $20 million through January 9th in Russia and Kazakhstan. The film went out on a record 580 prints, including Ukraine and other ex-USSR territories.
Here’s the blurb for the movie:
A man (Khabensky) who serves in the war between the forces of Light and Dark comes into possession of a device that can restore life to Moscow, which was nearly destroyed by an apocalyptic event.
The good news for us Europeans is that a release is coming, and once more the US and Canada will no doubt have to wait a little longer…again!
I really like the first movie and I’m dying to see the second, but I have some reservations for both Day Watch and the final in the trilogy, and the reasons why come from KFCC:
Producers have broadened the appeal of fantasy-action-thriller Night Watch by adding romance and comedy to Day Watch. Bekmambetov is due to shoot an English-language concluding film to the Watch trilogy in collaboration with Fox and Russian producers.
Romance and comedy could totally kill the feel that was setup in the first movie, and setting the third in English language (not his native tongue nor that of the current actors) seems more of a marketing ploy to lead into his next movie than staying true to the source material. Worrying indeed, but we shall have to wait to see.
