I haven’t been this pumped about seeing a Pierce Brosnan movie since… well… ever. The Matador trailers and commercials hooked from the early days of it’s campaign. Add Greg Kinnear to that list (yes… still one of my favorite actors working today) and I’m there.
Brosnan plays an aging hit man who starts falling apart in several ways. To me this thing looks hilarious and I can’t wait to see it. Not all the critics seem to support my enthusiasm… but most of them do. Here are some of The Matador reviews:
“The movie has a nicely modulated mix of comedy and pathos, but succeeds as much because of the two lead performances as Richard Shepard’s writing and directing.”
James Berardinelli, REELVIEWS“The movie’s writer-director, Richard Shepard, balances the macabre and the sentimental, and understands that although his film contains questions like ‘don’t successful people always live with blood on their hands?’ its real subject is friendship.”
Roger Ebert, CHICAGO SUN-TIMES“Never as good as you’d hoped or as bad as you’d feared, The Matador is one of those of up-and-down experiences.”
Rick Groen, GLOBE AND MAIL“The Matador gets a 151-proof tequila shot of sharp comedy from the droll byplay between Pierce Brosnan and Greg Kinnear.”
Kirk Honeycutt, HOLLYWOOD REPORTER
As of this moment, The Matador is carrying a nice 71% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Good reviews or bad, I can’t wait to see this one. I’ll give my review of it over the weekend once I’ve seen it.
