10 X-Men Films?!?

With all due respect to the Spider-Man franchise (which I really enjoy), for my money the X-Men is the best comic adaptation franchise in history. The first X-Men single handedly saved the genre after Batman nearly killed it (Mr. Freeze anyone?), and X2 was even better (I think the best comic book movie yet).

Recently, X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner was interviewed where she let on 3 very interesting bits of information:

1) She thinks there will be more X-Men films

2) She believes X-Men 3 is the best one yet (but what else is she supposed to say?)

3) Originally there were to be at least 10 X-Men films!

The good folks over at Coming Soon give us this:

“Our original goal was to have like ‘Star Wars’, ‘X-Men’ 7, 8, 9 and 10 because there are certainly enough comics out there. And of course to have spin-offs. It would be nice as we incorporated new characters into each movie if they could continue to move on.”

There are some people out there who actually believe that X-Men 3 will be the last one. I think that’s naive. If X-Men 3 makes money (and let’s face it… it WILL make money), then the studios will make #4 and #5 and #6 and keep counting up to infinity as long as it’s bringing in the crowds. As soon as the money stops rolling… so will the cameras. Just my two cents worth.
