This one hurts. According to the good folks over at Moviehole, Sony has decided to dump the Hellboy 2 project. You’ve GOT to be kidding me!!!!
Sony were going to oversee the sequel, but have now decided against it. (I’m guessing, based on what I know, that it is one of the many properties that Sony has decided to disattach themselves too. Quite a few have gone that way of late, mostly, because they’ve got their big fish – “Spider-Man”, 007 and so on – and they’d rather spend their moolah on those, less riskier, franchises).
Ok, if I’m going to be objective, then I can SORTA see where Sony is coming from on this. They’ve got a HUGE superhero franchise that is guaranteed to make truck loads of money for them (Spider-Man), so why not focus all your attention on that. Also, as much as I liked the first Hellboy (I loved it actually), the fact of the matter is that it cost $96 million… and only made $99 million world wide. That makes Hellboy 2 a riskier venture for Sony.
Bottom line, someone else will pick it up. Of that I have no doubt. But this was still odd news… understandable or not. Thanks to Nazz for the heads up.
