I don’t like this news at all. Director Jon Favreau has said in a recent interview with MTV that they’re NOT going to have Tony Stark at an alcoholic in the Iron Man film. Bad move.
To me, without that aspect of Stark that makes him so human, so flawed, the story looses any sense of real depth. I’m not a big Iron Man fan, but that aspect of his character makes him interesting. Here’s an excerpt from the good folks over at Dark Horizons:
“The alcoholism doesn’t come into play until later on in the story of Iron Man. [The comic] started off in the ’60s, where it was about him as a successful manufacturer who developed this suit.
HUGE mistake. So what we’re left with is a super rich guy, who runs a billion dollar corporation, and he uses his wealth to finance cool stuff that he uses to fight crime? Hmmm… where have I heard that before??? Oh yeah… BAT-FUCKING-MAN. Come on Jon! Give your head a shake! Don’t take out the element that gives this guy real depth. PLEASE! it’s not too late!
