You know, as much as I like David Carradine, I still scratch my head every time I think about the fact that they cast him as a Chinese dude in Kung Fu over Bruce Lee. It has never made sense… nor will it ever. It was a stupid move.
Now, with that little rant out of the way, it looks like they’re gearing up to make a film version of the Kung Fu TV show. But don’t worry folks… they’ve already confirmed that David Carradine won’t be a part of it (at least not as the title character… I’ll bet a shinny dollar they at least get him in there as a cameo).
The good folks at Yahoo News give us the following:
Legendary’s distribution president, Scott Mednick, said the feature adaptation would take place mostly in China and focus on Caine’s training as a Shaolin monk and the circumstances that lead him to the Old American West.
While kung fu action will figure prominently in the picture, as it did on TV, Mednick said the film would strive for a greater sense of realism than has been depicted in other martial-arts films. “We’re not looking at this as ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,’ with people flying all around,” Mednick said. “The actual priests of the Shaolin Temple can do things that are amazing without wire work or special effects.”
You know… as much at TV-to-Film movies suck most of the time… and even though I rolled my eyes when I first heard about this… I’ve got to admit they way they seem to be approaching this project sounds like it has merit. Think about it. The premise of the original show was a very good one… and focusing on the younger life of Kwai Chang Caine back at the Shaolin Temple and the issues that drive him to flee his country for the Americas could be amazing! Yeah… sign me up for this one. Thanks to T-Vo for the heads up.
