When your movie opens, you don’t want to see your film drop by more than 45% from the first weekend to the second weekend. That’s just common knowlege. HOWEVER, I always try to remind the people support that theory that you can’t apply that to films that have HUGE opening weekends… because it just means everyone has seen it.
Pirates of the Caribbean 2 has dropped 55% from its first weekend to its second weekend. That’s bad right? Well… sure… if you consider $62 million a bad second weekend. Good grief!!!
When a movie opens to over $130 million dollars you can’t expect it NOT to drop by 50% or more (unless it’s the greatest film of all time). Because it means most people have already seen it. So who cares if Pirates dropped by that much? It’s USUALLY a good rule… but NOT in a situation like this one.
As a side note, Bosoffice mojo reports that Pirates 2 (which had the single biggest opening weekend in film history) has fallen to third place (Behind Shrek 2 and SPider-man) for all time best SECOND weekend. Who needs to look for buried treasure when the boxoffice is giving them all they can handle!
