PSP UMD Movies are Officially Done

I’ve been saying it since day #1 the PSP came out. It looks like a great little gaming device… but NO ONE will want to watch movies on it with their little UMD format. And guess what… it’s now official. Sony has announced the death of UMD.

But really… is anyone surprised? universal and Paramount already announced ages ago that they weren’t going to put their movies out in that format anymore… sales have been pathetic, and major stores have been reducing the amount of shelf space they’ve been getting. Who on earth wants to pay $20 to watch a movie on a tiny little screen? It looks like the answer is: “Not many people at all”.

As I said in an article back in February: “Watching movies on a hand held is a novelty at best. It was doomed to never be a legitimate movie format, and now that all the initial hype has passed, all that’s left is the cold hard truth. UMD’s don’t sell.” And now they don’t sell at all. RIP UMD.
