Die Hard vs. The Transformers

Die Hard 4 (I refuse to call it Live Free or Die Hard) has it’s release date. June 29th 2007. This isn’t a very bright idea… because the following week on July 4th, a little film called The Transformers will open up, and that will pretty much put the breaks on any big box office returns Die Hard may be hoping to make.

I’m honestly stunned by how many people are writing off The Transformers. To be honest it just sorta makes me giggle a little and feel like I know a secret that no one else does (that NEVER happens… usually I constantly feel like there is a big joke going around and I’m the only one who doesn’t get it).

I have predicted before… and I’m 100% sticking with this… The Transformers will break every opening weekend box office record known to man. I’m not saying it’s going to be a great movie… we won’t know that for a long time… but people will flock to the theaters on opening weekend. Why?

There is already buzz about the film. Not HUGE buzz… but buzz (the theater I saw Pirates in the other week showed the Transformers teaser and about a third of the theater stood up and cheered). But here’s the MAIN thing…

About 6 weeks out from the release date, Steven Spielberg will have a trailer cut of Giant F’ing robots in downtown Los Angeles beating the crap out of each other and causing major destruction. Fighter jets sweeping down, transforming and diving through a building to attack an Autobot on the other side. ILM (the total undisputed heavyweight champion of the Visual Effects world) will make it look jaw droppingly amazing and the anticipation for this film will explode. You’ll see.

Will the film be any good? Who knows. But you wait… oh yes my friends you wait and see. By the time this movie is ready to open, every theater will indeed be packed and records will be broken, and Die Hard 4 will have to just be happy with what it made opening weekend.

Being the arrogant prick that I am, a year from now I’ll refer back to this post to yell out “I TOLD YOU SO”. And if I’m wrong… being the arrogant pricks YOU all are… I’m sure you’ll refer back to this post and yell “WE TOLD YOU SO”! Arrogant pricks unite!
