Bad news for Halo fans. The good folks over at Cinescape give us this:
According to The Hollywood Reporter, James Cameron has signed Joe Letteri and Weta Digital to create the visual effects, creatures and enviorments for his upcoming film AVATAR. “Weta has proven themselves a leader in visionary effects, especially in the area of performance capture based character animation, which is a big part of my new film,” Cameron said.
This is amazing news for those of us looking forward to Cameron’s new Avatar flick (which comes out in the summer of 2008 by the way). But it opens up a HUGE question mark for those looking forward to a Halo film.
WETA digital is supposed to be doing all the effects work on Halo… Halo was initially supposed to have a 2007 release date… that got changed to 2008… but what are they going to do now? Obviously they’re still going to be using WETA. That part isn’t in question here.
Obviously things with the Halo project are in such disarray right now the project got pushed back even more (I’m speculating here folks) which meant team WETA was going to be free, and were available to sign up for Avatar. I don’t think WETA has the manpower to work on 2 major heavy effects projects at the same time.
Best case senario is that it looks like (once again… I’m speculating here) Halo won’t see a big screen any sooner than 2009. Maybe by then they’ll have their act together.
