Snakes On A Flop

Wow… I didn’t expect this. I figured Snakes on a Plane would take in about $40 million on its opening weekend… looks like I (and a lot of other people) were waayyyyy off.

According to Boxoffice Mojo, Snakes on a Plane only took in $13.8 million dollars on its opening weekend, and that included Thursday night showings. Yikes!

According to Marketing Watch, Snakes spent about $15 million on marketing… on top of the $35 million dollar production budget… which means it needs to make $50 million just to break even on paper.

There will be some repeat business, but I don’t see this thing having staying power at all. This is really a shame, because the film ended up being kind of fun.

It was a DRASTIC mistake not to release this film to the critics. Without the critics (and yes, I’m biased) the only people who really heard anything positive about this film was the online film fan community. Some positive critic buzz would have helped that out a lot (like my review).

There is no spinning this. $13.8 million on opening weekend is a FLOP. Even for a $35 million dollar film. And that’s a shame… because this film deserved better.
