Brendan Fraser has signed up to again play the cute and rugged Rick O’Connell in the upcoming third to The Mummy series. The folks over at comingsoon.net give us this:
TMZ.com has learned that Universal Pictures has signed Brendan Fraser to reprise his role of Rick O’Connell in a third installment of “The Mummy” franchise. The movie is being readied to begin shooting early next year, says the site.
The studio has apparently made an offer to Joe Johnston (Hidalgo, Jurassic Park III) to direct. Stephen Sommers wrote and directed the first two films. “Smallville” creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar are penning the new film.
The site says that the project will be a reimagining of the first two films, so we’ll have to see whether Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo or Oded Fehr will be back as well.
Ok I know I know. This movie will probably not be very good. The first two in the series were fun, but the second one was a little less so and this one would have to work pretty hard to be even as good as the second, especially if the other cast doesn’t return. Will they? I’ll be surprised if Rachel Weisz does, not since winning an Oscar. The others, I just don’t know.
Why did Brendan Fraser decide to stay? Honestly? I think the guy just likes to work. If you take a look at his imdb.com profile he has almost fifty acting credits to his name and since he is only 38 years old (and only started getting credited roles in his twenties) it is safe to say not only does he love to work but he works a lot.
Will I see this movie? I don’t know, if the trailer looks good I might. Will I loose respect for Fraser for deciding to be in it? Definitely not. This movie probably won’t be a huge hit, nor will it give Fraser much of a stretch for his acting muscles but he will have a lot of fun making it, and it’ll pay his rent.
I have nothing but respect Brendan Fraser for doing what he loves and not caring about the end result.
