I don’t know if there has ever been a more polarized time in the political landscape in my short life time as there exists today. That polarization seems to be fuelling the buzz and anti-buzz around the new docudrama “Death Of A President“. In it, President George W. Bush is assassinated. The project then looks at what the fallout would be after that event. ThisIsLondon.co.uk gives us this:
The two hour drama, in which events are ‘re-created’ by the use of footage and interviews, shows the media storm around the War on Terror as Muslims are fingered as the culprits before there is any evidence. In the wake of the assassination, authorities focus on a Syrian-born man in the search for the culprit.
This film is showing at the Toronto International Film Festival later this month.
Predictably, a number of people on the political right are THRASHING this movie before ever seeing a single frame of it. Saying things like:
Eric Staal of Republicans Abroad in London said last night: ‘I wonder if they are celebrating the idea that the president could be assassinated.
To me, the film looks like a commentary on the current state of affairs in the world. There is nothing wrong with that. HOWEVER… if the movie goes so far as to suggest the president SHOULD be assassinated… well then… that would be way over the line. However, nothing to this point has suggested that is the case. Personally, I really like these “what if” types of projects.
