A lot of people complain about the rising prices in movie tickets. Well it would appear in Denmark they have it the worst
Denmark has seen the most dramatic increase in movie ticket prices over the last five years and now leads the world with an average price of $12.42 per ticket.
Now really that is not so terrible. But keep in mind that this is the “average ticket” price. Which means some might be higher and some lower. Here in Canada, we pay anywhere from $8 to $10 for a spot.
Now about 20 years ago, when I was in my mid teens I remember sitting at the theatre, leaning to see around the quarterback who sat in front of me, munching on candybars and popcorn and I had a stroke of genius. If they only made the seats to slope more so I could see over the gorrillas who always sit in front of me, and offered a better selection of goodies. Hell, Id love a pizza to snack on, or icecream. Id pay my ticket TWICE to have that available.
Now we have collesium seating, massive screens, bigger seats, food courts instead of just candybars and popcorn. And I am paying twice as much for it.
So the rise in prices has seen a rise in quality as well. In Denmark they are blaming the cost of equipment upgrades for the rise in ticket prices. And here it is no different. A lot of the smaller non-stadium seating cinemas have closed their doors because they cannot compete with the big multiplexes with foodcourts and better seating.
The whole point of going to a movie theatre is the EXPERIENCE. Sure, you could pay $5 and have your whole family watch it in your livingroom, but its not the experience. The cost is worth the experience, and provided they justify each upgrade in ticket prices with more perks to me, I will keep going.
One other thing to consider as people complain about the prices. They still pack out the theatres. And people are happier for what they get. So its likely to get higher. As long as they give me more for my money, I don’t care!
