A lot of people were caught by surprise with the Heath Ledger as the Joker announcement. Some people really like it… some people hated it… but for the most part I think it’s fair to say that the majority of people were “ok” with it. I’m one of those.
But now Ledger is making a surprising statement that is almost guaranteed to rub comic book fans (and Batman fans in particular) the wrong way. He’s coming out and saying HE HATES COMIC BOOK MOVIES. The good folks at Comics2Film give us this:
He says that ordinarily doing something like that would not be of interest to him. “I actually hate comic book movies, like fucking hate them, they just bore me shitless and they’re just dumb. But I thought what Chris Nolan did with Batman was actually really good, really well directed, and Christian Bale was really great in it.”
Wow Heath. Way to really endear yourself to the fans of the franchise. What a totally bone head thing to say.
Look, I’m not saying the guy should lie. But if you HATE comic book movies… and you’re about to film one… maybe you should just keep your mouth shut. it’s just me.
Now, having said that… I don’t think it makes a difference one way or the other for the quality of the film or how good of a job he’ll do. Just because he doesn’t like comic book movies doesn’t mean he can’t play his role in one really well. He’s an actor after all.
To say that “Only an actor who likes comics should play in a comic book movie” is like saying “Only people who love rapists should play one in a movie”. Yeah… you get my point.
It was still a stupid ass thing for him to say though.
