This is a twist. The documentary spawns a movie. I know that Happy Feet was likely inspired by March of the Penguins, but I cannot think of any other documentary that inspires a feature film. Especially one quite like this.
Murderball, which has inspired an upcoming project for director James Mangold, is probably the most entertaining, most easily accessible documentary that has ever existed. Sure it teaches us stuff, but it’s also hilarious, action-packed and feel-good. Besides, nobody could play lead murderball (aka wheelchair rugby) player Mark Zupan in a way that would better his own appearance in the Oscar-nominated, Sundance-winning doc.
I agree that they should get some REAL wheelchair rugby players to do this movie, but in the lead role it might be something you need to train and mold some athletic actor into doing. Especially if it is going to be a drama.
This is the part that I think is the most interesting about this project. Its to be a drama.
Where the Hollywood money printing industry bleeding the life out of everything, you would think this might translate into a great sports/action movie in the lines of RollerBall (bad movie, great concept) or a comedy vehicle with Ben Stiller in the lines of DodgeBall. Heck, they could even amp it up and CGI it as a floating combat chair violent game of the future. But its not going that way.
This will tell a STORY. All that action and aggression aside, this will be a real story.
I am just glad taht Eminem was shot down for the lead. Yeah, he asked.
