At the risk of sounding fluffy, I really enjoyed My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Another fine example of what a small budget, rich characters and good dialog can do, and instantly people knew who this previously unknown Nia Vardalos was.
I, like many others, thought Vardalos was on her way to movie superstardom (be it as a writer, director or actress). However, that wasn’t to be. Her follow up film Connie and Carla and her horrible horrible horrible TV version of Greek Wedding killed any semblance of career momentum. But it looks like she’s getting another chance by working with Tom Hanks again. Cinematical give us this:
the writer-actress is once again teaming up with Tom Hanks (who is serving as executive producer) on a film called My Life in Ruins. The two are also paired up on something called A Wilderness of Monkeys, though I’m not sure if these are different films or one in the same. My Life in Ruins finds Vardalos playing a tour guide traveling through Greece with a group of tourists.
Vardalos’ strength is her pure simple charm. When it was obscured in Connie and Carla, she didn’t work… when it was too heavily glossed in the TV series it didn’t work. This sounds like it could be an attempt to get back to that… which at this point is a good idea. I’m interested to see how this one turns out.
