Pirates of the Caribbean 2 Dead Man’s Chest has conquered and plundered all summer and will hit the 1 Billion mark today. Pirates good at getting cash? To me the whole movie was one big dazzling display of garish money, and nothing with any sort of substance. Was it mildly entertaining? Yes. But that’s all. And now they have a fortune. But I already know where they are burying their treasure, I’ll give you a hint; it is near a Black Pearl. And if it does as well as this movie I might just jump overboard. The good folks over at cinescape.com give us this:
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN’S CHEST will, barring an alien invasion, cross the $1 billion mark in worldwide box office receipts.
PIRATES will join TITANTIC and LOTR: RETURN OF THE KING as the only films to ever cross the mark.
The film has banked $414 million domestically while the rest of it’s haul comes from the overseas market where it has been an exceptional sucess.
The next installment is expected in theaters on May 25, 2007.
Titanic. A story about the one of the biggest tragedy at sea. Can I see this movie earning a billion dollars? Yes. The Lord of the Rings? An Oscar award winning movie series based on the J.R.Tolken’s masterpiece novels. If this movie had earned any less I would have been surprised. But A sequel about a pirate who owes an unpaid debt to Davy Jones and his army of sea-phantoms…that takes home 1 billion in loot? I feel ill. This is why there is so much crap flooding the theaters these days. When so-so pirate sequels are making a billion dollars I am not surprised that the film industry has decided that the money is in the mediocre.
That being said I believe that all films are art to some degree. And if the artist wants to sell the pieces and the happy, exciting ones sell then…well sometimes an artist may feel more inspired to make that sort of art.
But…it still bugs me. Because it’s good to be provoked, to think, and be moved by art, even if it is commercial stuff. However art is subjective so maybe somebody had a life changing experience through POC 2. I just sort of doubt it.
