Liam Neeson is an actor I’ve always has tons of respect for, and Pierce Brosnan is a guy I’ve always kinda liked… but I gained a whole new level of respect for him after seeing The Matador (which by the way… if you haven’t seen it yet you REALLY have to). So a few months ago when I heard they would be playing in a Western film together, I was instantly interested. The movie is called “Seraphim Falls“.
Seraphim Falls made it’s world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival to some decent reviews. It’s totally character driven, and one of the things that really catches my attention is that everyone is saying there is actually very little dialogue in the film, which is a challenge for any actor.
A western epic about revenge and forgiveness set in the 1860s, shortly after U.S. Civil War. In the movie, Neeson’s character, a former Confederate colonel chases Brosnan, a former Union army captain, from the Rocky Mountains to the desert to carry out his last mission: revenge for an atrocity.
The western genre doesn’t really do it for me usually (although there are ALWAYS exception to that… there are a couple of western I just LOVE), but this one intrigues me. Man against Man stories enthral me. Even that old Star Trek episode with the two guys, one black on the left and the other black on the right, where the characters are driven, not by pride or arrogance or ego… but buy something more primal. Rage, vengeance, and each one of them has the moral sense of being “right”. Always good stuff.
