Last night I was invited to the special “The Last Kiss” party in Toronto, the new Zach Braff flick (Yes, that’s me with Zach last night). The first hour I was there I was bored out of my skull. My date had to cancel on me last minute, so I showed up alone like the loser I am. Whheeee.
The event was red carpet all the way. When I arrived, news crews were already gathered around outside waiting to talk to the talent and celebrities, and spectators stood around wanting to catch a glimpse of famous people. I walked up, gave them my name, and met up with Mike, the studio publicist assigned to me for the evening, and in I went.
Gotta say, the uncountable number of hot women working all the free bars was nice (yes, I have the sexual maturity of a 14 year old… sue me). Did I mention the free bars? The location for the party was great… but like I said… the first hour I was there I almost left because I was so bored. But then the festivities really got started. Carey Brothers and Joshua Radin were there and performed musical numbers from The Last Kiss soundtrack… and they sounded fricken awesome. Just simple acoustic sets.
The buzz about the film is just amazing. In talking to a few people who had screened it earlier in the day, you could tell they were all very excited about it, and the studio folks seem legitimately proud of it too. That’s always a good sign.
Zach and I finally met up and over a couple of drinks started talking about the film and his career. He loves this movie. I know the cast HAS TO SAY THAT… but I honestly got the feeling he meant it.
I asked him about his career and where it’s headed. Specifically I asked him:
JOHN: “You are right on the cusp of breaking out into a legitimate A LIST superstar. Does that reality effect how you choose your projects now?”
ZACH: “Aww man thanks. Seriously, I know this sounds like a cliché, but it’s the truth. My mantra is ‘Make movies I would want to watch’. Seriously. Doesn’t matter if it’s something fun, or something serious. If it looks like a film I’d want to sit and take in, then I want to be in it.”
Overall it was a really enjoyable night. The enthusiasm for The Last Kiss is tangible and I for one can’t wait to see it. The early reviews are looking good too with quotes like this one:
“The first smart movie of the fall season.”

The Last Kiss opens up this Friday, September 15th.
As a side note… I still don’t think Braff is the right guy to be the next “Fletch”. Not that he’s not “good” enough for it… but it’s just not the right role for him… nor he for it. But that’s neither here not there.
