The Man of the Year reviews are ulgy. The idea behind “Man of the Year” is a great one that you just knew someone was going to capitalize on. Basically take a Jon Stewart character, and make him run for president. Make Robin WIlliams the lead character and you’ve got gold right? RIGHT???? Well… maybe not.
The early Man of the Year reviews are coming in… and boy are they ugly. I mean REALLY ugly. Not because of it’s political nature… but more because the film fails to really make political commentary either way… which is what the film was set up perfectly to do.
Here is what some of the critics are saying in their Man of the Year reviews:
An awkward mix of standard genres that doesn’t give us what we desperately need in this increasingly desperate political season — a black and snarling assault on our imbecile status quo.
Richard Schickel – TIME MagazineAs well as this may have worked as a comedy … it tries too hard to be a thriller and a drama, which is where it falls flat on its face.
Edward Douglas – ComingSoon.netThere’s nothing about Man of the Year that’s quite as fantastic as its depiction of moribund Saturday Night Live as culturally and politically relevant.
Nick Schager – Slant MagazineAll the audience can do with this DOA comedy is wait for their next chance to see Robin Williams do another stand-up routine, providing a precious break in an otherwise tedious film.
Ron Wilkinson – Monsters and Critics
This is all really too bad. The idea for this film and the casting were all perfect. But alas they dropped the ball. I think we all sort of saw ti coming when the first trailer came out. It lacked punch… apparently so did the movie. As of this moment Man of the Year is holding a sad 14% on Rotten Tomatoes and I don’t see it getting much higher.
