Even when I used to be a Christian I used to hide my face in embarrassment whenever I would hear about some christian group tryig to ban Harry Potter. Don’t get me wrong, I totally believe they should and do have the right to protest or express their dissenting opinions… but to try to get a book banned… because it has magic in it… is just… well… STUPID.
I though we wouldn’t hear about any more of this nonsense… but here it is again! This time it’s not a Christian group, it’s just a concerned mom in Georgia trying to get her local school board to ban the books. MSNBC gives us this:
Laura Mallory, a mother of four, told a hearing officer for the Gwinnett County Board of Education on Tuesday that the popular fiction series is an “evil” attempt to indoctrinate children in the Wicca religion. Board of Education attorney Victoria Sweeny said that if schools were to remove all books containing reference to witches, they would have to ban “Macbeth” and “Cinderella.”
They’d also have to ban The Wizard of Oz, Snow White, Peter Pan, Bugs Bunny (because only demoniacally possessed rabbit can talk) and just about any other thing you can shake a stick at.
Look, I’m not a Harry Potter fan (although I did like the 4th film quite a bit), but even I know IT’S JUST A BLOODY MOVIE (or book in this case). This is all well and good… but heaven help these people if they ever come to my community and try to ban Star Wars. I’m not a violent guy… but blood would flow.
