12.3 Million in the 20 European markets is pretty good for Oliver Stone’s heroic tale World Trade Center. The folks over at yahoonews.com give us this:
Oliver Stone’s September 11 drama “World Trade Center” led the international box office by a healthy margin for the weekend, selling an estimated $12.3 million worth of tickets in 20 markets. The Nicolas Cage vehicle was propelled by muscular openings in nine territories and buttressed by a worldwide promotion tour by the film’s director and cast.
The biggest of the new markets was the U.K., where “World Trade Center” bowed at No. 2 with an estimated $3 million. It opened at No. 1 in Spain with $2.3 million, and No. 3 in Germany with $1.5 million.
I am a little surprised by this. I thought this movie would do well in North America where the events of 9/11 are close to home but overseas they have their own terrorist tragedies. But this is a movie put out by Oliver Stone, a respected if controversial director and it has had great reviews. Bottom line though it is a simple story based around a few lives that were greatly effected on the day the towers fell.
It’s nice to know that audiences still want to see simple films about people helping each other out in times of crisis. Let’s hope it inspires the right people to stop fighting and start lending a hand.
