The movie Factory Girl may be shelved while Bob Dylan and his lawyers decided if he is shown in an unflattering light. Here’s what the folks over at monstersandcritics.com had to say:
Bob Dylan wants to stop the release of new film ‘Factory Girl’ because he believes it falsely implies he is responsible for Edie Sedgwick’s suicide. Sedgwick, played by Sienna Miller, was Warhol’s biggest protégé until she became addicted to drugs and killed herself by overdosing on barbiturates in 1971. While living at New York’s Chelsea Hotel she befriended Dylan and the pair are rumored to have had a relationship.
Dylan’s lawyer, Orin Snyder, has said the original screenplay portrayed the alleged relationship using Dylan’s name, and suggested he dumped Sedgwick – causing “her tragic decline into heroin addiction and eventual suicide.”
Ok so the movie now has changed Bob’s name to “Danny Quin” and they say the character is supposed to be a mix between Dylan, Sir Mick Jagger and Jim Morrison. However the press is saying it’s a dead on version of Bob Dylan. So far the Weinstein company has not commented.
If the Weinstein company is breaking the law then obviously they will have to bow to Dylan, but if this is a grey area (which it most likely is) then there are different questions that rise up. Like if I knew that Bob Dylan was responsible for the suicide of a sweet hippy child would I stop buying his albums? I don’t think so. Rock stars have bad reputations, some have been convicted for beating their wives a few have had accusations of rape and Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols was actually charged with murdering his girlfriend. Do I condone this sort of actions in anyone? No, but do I forget about the news stories when a good tune comes on the radio? Yes, usually I do.
This lawsuit makes me wonder about Dylan, does he think he inspired Edie Sedgwick’s suicide? Is he still holding some sort of guilt about how he treated her? It’s strange. One thing that Dylan should keep in mind is that no one is responsible for suicide, except for the person committed it. Obviously a person can piss someone off, or hurt their feelings and that may speed up the depression slightly but choosing to take drugs and eventually kill yourself is something that usually stems from a long way back, with years of depression, often hidden. It’s not just about one person.
What does everyone out there think? Could this hurt Dylan’s career, or is he being too sensitive?
