Columbia Pictures has just announced that they have decided to make a new movie about Cleopatra, it will focus on her strength as a military leader. The folks over at cinemablend.com give us this:
Variety says they (Columbia Pictures) have picked up the rights to a 10-page proposal which they’ve hired Scott Rudin to turn into a movie. The idea is supposed to be a “new take” on Cleo which will “dispel the movie myths that focused on pageantry and Cleopatra’s skills as a seductress”. Instead, she’ll be a gritty look at her as a military tactician lusting for power.
Ok I know that people are already crying “noooooo” at this, saying Columbia is nuts considering the terrible flop the original 1963 movie was but…..I like the idea. As a woman I have to say that Cleopatra has always been an interesting historical figure to me. She used what she had to get what she wanted, did she make mistakes? Oh my yes (sleeping with siblings was frowned upon even back then) but was she a strong woman in most areas? Hell yeah.
I would be completely up for a movie that showed her rise to military power and the way she co- ruled an empire in a time when women were given to people as gifts. Producer Scott Rudin has had his failures and success’s but overall he has chosen very strong movies, most of them making money or critical acclaim, so I support him being involved.
The biggest question I have now is who the heck is going to play Cleopatra? Angelina Jolie? Monica Belucci? Who’s your pick?
