It’s really sad when a high quality film (or TV show for that matter) gets produced, and for one reason or another it doesn’t gather up the audience it deserves or needs to stay alive. Firefly was a terrific and creative little show (although I don’t think it was as good as many of it’s fans, I sure did like it a lot). It’s movie incarnation, Serenity, is a magnificent film that just feel on public deaf ears. Go figure.
But Browncoats rejoice, it looks like the Firefly Universe may be alive and well… in a different medium. A massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG for short) much in the same vein as World of Warcraft or Star Wars Galaxies. The good folks over at Movies Online give us this:
Zap2it.com quoted Multiverse co-founder and executive producer Corey Bridges on the project the company has undertaken; “FOX’s ‘Firefly’ series is set in an incredibly rich and exciting universe. It’s going to make a very compelling and unique online experience filled with adventure, humor, and mystery. It’s our hope that ‘Firefly’s’ passionate and dedicated community of fans will enjoy the chance to become part of the story as they develop and explore the worlds of ‘Firefly.'”
Ok now, I have two different trains of thought on this one:
1) The Firefly universe is an AMAZING one. It is huge, has lots of diversity, lots of political intruige and just a lot of space to explore around in. It’s a perfect sort of playground for a MMORPG. Good choice. HOWEVER…..
2) Does the Firefly universe have a big enough following to actually support a decent sized MMORPG incarnation of that fantastic universe? I mean lets’ face it… not a lot of people watched the show… even less saw the movie (damn shame too)… and of those who did actually watch the show or the movie, only a certain percentage of them play video games. Is this product actually financially viable?
I’ll let you guys discuss that question. I’ll give the game a try when it comes out… but I have my doubts many other will.
