Up to this point I have had very little interest in the upcoming Tim Burton project “Sweeney Todd, mostly because… well… it’s a Tim Burton project. That being said, the casting of Johnny Depp (does Burton know how to do a film without Johnny Depp, or would he just crawl into the fetal position and cry in the dark if Depp’s schedule was booked?) and Sacha Baron Cohen have at least got a touch interested.
However, they’ve just announced the addition of Alan Rickman to the cast… so now I can at least say I’m “curious” about the movie. Rickman will play Judge Turpin. The following is given to us by Yahoo News:
The film centers on Benjamin Barker (Depp), a man unjustly imprisoned by the lecherous Judge Turpin (Rickman). Barker returns as barber Sweeney Todd and exacts revenge. Paramount Pictures will distribute domestically, and Warner Bros. will distribute internationally.
Will someone please explain to me why Rickman isn’t in more major films? I don’t know the man personally, so maybe he just chooses not to work more, but if that’s not the case, what casting director in their right mind doesn’t put Alan Rickman in their film is he’s available? This guy is pure quality money in any role he’s ever appeared in.
From being 2 of the top 5 best screen villains of all time (Die Hard, Robin Hood), drama, comedy, period films… you name it, this guy can do it. So yeah, MAYBE Sweeney Todd will be on my radar now.
What is your favorite Alan Rickman role or favorite Rickman line to date? Mine is from Robin hood: “[to a wench] You. My room. 10:30 tonight. [to another wench] You. 10:45… And bring a friend. ” CLASSIC!
