There has been a lot of talk and discussion going around about the new Alfonso Cuaron film “Children of Men”. Well, the film finally opens in wide release tonight, so I thought I’d yack a little about the early Children of Men reviews that are floating around out there.
The whole concept of this film has had me fascinated ever since I saw the first trailer a few months back, and from the looks of the reviews, it seems it’s a winner. As a matter of fact, I’ve been seeing a lot of people throwing this film up on their top films of 2006 lists (a number of them call it the best film of the year). So here is what a bunch of the critics are saying in their Children of Men reviews:
“Director Alfonso Cuarón takes his career to a whole other level here. He expertly preys on our doomsday fears, punctuating scenes with the harsh sounds and images of war we’ve already heard and seen on the nightly news.”
Dezhda Mountz E! Online“Thrilling, important, and invigoratingly bleak, Children of Men is one of the very best movies to come out in 2006.”
Lisa Schwarzbaum Entertainment Weekly“For those capable of enduring its most gut-wrenching moments, Children of Men offers inventive energy, ferocious intelligence, and yet, affirmation of life against the most calamitous circumstances.”
Gene Seymour Newsday“Made with palpable energy, intensity and excitement, it compellingly creates a world gone mad that is uncomfortably close to the one we live in. It is a Blade Runner for the 21st century, a worthy successor to that epic of dystopian decay.”
Kenneth Turan Los Angeles Times
Those are some solid and exciting reviews. As of this moment, Children of Men is holding a fantastic 93% rating over on Rotten Tomatoes. Look for my review tomorrow.
