Civil War of Next Gen DVD Formats™ Over?

It seems that this Civil War of Next Gen DVD Formats™ might not last long enough for someone to realize that I have trademarked the phrase Civil War of Next Gen DVD Formats™. Its really not that I mind that people keep calling it a Format War, but we already had one of those. This Civil War of Next Gen DVD Formats™ is different. Studios are picking sides. In the Format War, you could get all your movies on one format or the other. (You heard it here first folks!)

IMDB News

New York Times reported that the one-disc-fits-all (Total HD) development will be announced by Warner Bros. Chairman and CEO Barry Meyer at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, which opens on Monday. In an interview with the Times, Kevin Tsujihara, president of Warner Brothers Home Entertainment Group, described the new disc as an elegant way for studios to make their content available more widely “in a way that is not conceding defeat” for whichever format they have been backing.

So now a third runner enters the fray claiming to bring peace to the Civil War of Next Gen DVD Formats™. It sounds more like a format that simply includes BluRay, HD-DVD and Standard DVD. This might really throw a wrench into LG’s plans to unveil a player that can play BOTH HD formats as well as DVD.

Of course, if life was to imitate art, this story of Star Crossed Lovers could run like Romeo and Juliet.

Romeo of the house of BluRay falls deeply in love with Juliet of the house of HD-DVD. But with no player to support them both they must deny their family’s feuds, and plot to join despite the risks.

Then they both end up dead lying on the church floor and everyone hates themselves for letting their petty rivalries get carried away this far.

Lets just bring back Laserdisk and avoid all the bloodshed.
