Don’t Believe Sam Raimi Will Be Back For Spider-Man 4

It never ceases to amaze me that no matter how many times celebrities lie through their teeth and only tell us what we want to hear, we (including myself) just keep right on believing them as gospel truth. Take for example the recent interview with Sam Raimi on the issue of Spider-Man 4. Up till now, Raimi has ducked the questions of if he’ll be back for another run at the web. I personally think it’s obvious the man wants to move on to other things after doing a great job with the first 2 (and probably the third one as well).

But wait a second… hold the phone… the movie sites are all abuzz right now with an interview Raimi just did with Premiere magazine. The great folks over at Cinematical give us this:

But a new voice has just entered the discussion; one of the most important voices. Sam Raimi, the talented and beloved director of all three films in the franchise, has just offered his thoughts on the future of the franchise in a discussion with Premiere Magazine. You can read all his thoughts here, but the short version is, Raimi is interested in more movies provided he can keep Tobey Maguire on board. He admits it is possible he will tire of the franchise any day, but his mood right now is one of pure love.

You can see what’s happening here right? The movie (Spider-Man 3) release date is getting closer and closer. All Raimi and the studios want to do right now (and this is TOTALLY FAIR for them) is generate as much positive, exciting buzz as they can before the movie opens. They don’t want us talking about how Raimi isn’t coming back. They don’t want us speculating about who they’ll get to replace Maguire or have people crying that Maguire is the “ONLY” person who can play Spider-Man and that Raimi is the “ONLY” director who can direct it. They don’t want negative talk right now… they want positive hype and excitement. That’s all this little quote from Raimi is. A vague quote to generate positive hype and excitement.

If Raimi had said this 4 months after the release of Spider-Man 3… maybe I’d believe it. But as much as I love Raimi… I won’t believe a single thing he says about his own movie a few months before its release. Just my two cents worth.
