Musician bio-pics seem to be all the rage these days. To be honest, I’ve yet to be blown away by one. I thought walk the line was overrated, Ray was good, but didn’t blow me away or anything and coming soon are pics on Bob Dylan and Janice Joplin (don’t really care about either).
Fans of these musicians take it as a personal offense generally if you don’t like the movie based on their iconic musical heroes. To say “Walk the Line” wasn’t all that good of a movie is like saying “I’m going to piss on Johnny Cash’s grave and beat his great grandchildren”. But I digress..
Word is now that Ewan McGregor is the front runner to play deceased rocker Kurt Cobain in a bio-pic on the man’s life. You couldn’t ask for a better actor. McGregor has a way of making even the worst scripts almost seems enjoyable. My question is why on earth do a movie on Cobain? From everything I’ve seen on the guy from various documentaries and news stories, the guy was a strung out, self absorbed, narcissistic rocker who just happened to pump out some great tunes. The only thing I find interesting or worth seeing in a movie is the circumstances surrounding his death (suicide? Murder?) But with Courtney Love owning the rights to the film, I highly doubt we’ll get any of that.
Your thoughts? Do you agree? Am I way off base here?
