Jonny Depp may soon be signing on to star in the new bio-pick about Freddie Mercury. The good folks over at joblo.com gave us this:
Depp’s apparently been approached about portraying Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in a biopic being developed by Robert DeNiro’s company, Tribeca Productions. Queen guitarist, Brian May, recently confirmed that the film is in active development, mentioning “Discussions are at an early stage” and had this to say about Depp possibly playing Mercury: “He would be a worthy counterpart for Freddie on screen. I don’t think I can say any more right now.”
Wow, Johnny Depp as Freddie Mercury, I didn’t see that coming but now that there are talks of him considering the role I have to say that it’s not a bad idea..Depp takes his work seriously and he certainly has the talent to pull off the part if he sets his mind to it. Freddie Mercury would be a great challenge for Depp, whose love of character work is well known, and respected.
My only misgiving would be Johnny Depp’s star status. When I heard of the movie being made I had hoped that the role would go to a unknown actor so that the film would really be about Mercury and not about the actor playing him. Because especially with Depp people will be watching him so closely, trying to judge his performance, and seeing if this may be finally be the role that wins him Oscar recognition.
But then again that is the challenge of a star actor or actress. If they can make the audience sit down and watch them, well known and wealthy, play the part of a poor single mother, or a priest or a gay rock star and have it so that all that is seen is the character….well that is what acting is all about.
Johnny Depp seems to get that, so even though I started off hoping for an unknown I am now very happy with the prospect of Depp playing the lead singer of one of the greatest rock bands ever.
