Warner Brothers will be re-releasing it’s big selling movie The Departed into theaters this Friday to give the Oscar hopeful as much screen time as possible before the big day. The people over at movieweb.com give us this on the story:
Warner Bros. Pictures is planning to re-release the award-winning crime drama The Departed on Friday, January 26, 2006, in more than 1,300 theatres nationwide. The announcement was made by Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures. Directed by Martin Scorsese, The Departed originally opened domestically on October 6, 2006, taking the top spot at the box office in its first two weeks in release and receiving widespread critical acclaim. The film went on to earn $121 million at the domestic box office, making it Scorsese’s top-grossing film of all time. In addition, The Departed has brought in an estimated $125 million internationally.
This is a good idea to do I think with most movies that are nominated for Oscars, because, excluding The Departed there are so many fantastic films that get overlooked during the rest of the year and then once they are nominated for an Oscar everyone wishes that they had thought to watch them.
This year especially I feel has been an incredible year for films but to most of the movie going public there has only been crap because the best movies seem to have had only limited release. Movies like Little Children, Venus, The Queen, The Last King of Scotland, Volver, Notes on a Scandal, Pan’s Labrynth, Water, Letters From Iwo Jima, these are movies that many people missed out on and what made my year so rich in film. If all of these movies could be re-released into theaters now that they or their cast have gotten Oscar nominations I am sure that all of them would get at least some of the box office glory that they deserve.
I’m glad that The Departed has started the trend off this year, I truly hope it continues on with all of the wonderful films above.
