Well it seems that Will Ferrell will be teaming up once more with his good friends John C. Reilly.and director Adam McKay in the r-rating hopeful movie Step Brothers. The people over at cinematical.com give us this:
Director Adam McKay he confirmed that his next project with Ferrell and John C. Reilly is not concerned with what he calls the “PG-13 Game” and instead is aiming for a solid R rating for their upcoming comedy Step Brothers. McKay says, “We’re not stopping language or nudity. Already there are a couple jokes that have nudity and just 25 pages into it we’ve already said F*ck about seven times”.
The premise is as follows: Two spoiled guys (Ferrell and Reilly) become competitive stepbrothers after their single parents get hitched.
Sounds pretty good and I think it’s a great idea to not give in to the PG-13 pressures, true Will Ferrell’s movies are enjoyed by many a high school age guy but the major appeal to this type of movie is much more in the twenties and up category. Plus the young ones can still see the movie if they bring along a parent or guardian.
My only concern with a comedy getting rated R thing is the quality of the film. Most comedies are funny because things are insinuated and not actually shown, when everything is put out there it can actually decrease the humor, or the audience can get desensitized to all of the swearing and nudity and things become stale fast. Also films sometimes go so far over the top that audiences end up being shocked instead of tickled.
Of course this is not always the case, and with Will Ferrell I have never seen too much filthy or rude humor. Let’s hope this movie is put in the playful and fun category of the R Rated section.
