Aqua Teen Hunger Force Scares Boston

The terrorists are now targetting Boston. Oh wait, that was just Cartoon Network generating some free publicity for the Aqua Teen Hunger Force feature film, while feeding on the paranoid fears of the American public.

After pushing back the release date of the feature film adaptation of the Cartoon Network’s show “Aqua Teen Hunger Force,” the studio and its marketing company made a BIG splash with their campaign to promote the show.

Nine electronic light boards featuring one of the show’s characters (a Mooninite) triggered bomb scares around Boston on Wednesday, spurring authorities to close highways, two bridges and a stretch of the Charles River before bomb squads determined the devices were harmless, according to CNN.

For those of you who don’t know, the Mooninites are “outer-space delinquents” who are often depicted giving the middle finger. Apparently, the Mooninite on the light boards greeted authorities in this manner as well.

Considering only a small demographic would even get what the Mooninites are, I am surprised they thought this would generate buzz. However I am not surprised that randomly positioned electronic devices placed on highway overpasses and in other populated areas could be misconstrued as potential bomb scares.

I’m wagering someone gets fired for this. Its a “good idea at the time” scheme with no big picture follow-through.

Oh and yes, I do get the irony that I am criticizing this effort while still generating the buzz they were hoping for.
