Cage to Become the Sorcerer

I’m not going to gush on about how much I like Nicolas Cage. Yeah, I think he is cool. But this I didn’t see coming

JoBlo.com says:

Nicolas Cage is producing and will likely star in an upcoming live-action feature based on the classic tale THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE. The same story was featured in the classic Disney short in FANTASIA that starred Mickey Mouse as the apprentice who makes trouble while the sorcerer is sleeping. Before you get too bent out of shape that Cage is defiling a Disney classic, know that Cage is working on the film for Disney.

I recall back in school looking back on Fantasia as a classic. I would hail it as one of those movies that was animation for the sake of art. It had been some time since I had seen it, so I made a point of watching it again. Yeah, there was more to it than just the Mickey Mouse part. I then decided it was animation for the sake of art and didn’t bother to watch it ever again. Strange how I only remembered the Mickey Mouse part.

But that one segment of the Sorcerer’s Apprentice always stuck with me. The dancing brooms, sloshing buckets of water accumulating tidal waves of chaos. Good fun.

Cage’s project for Disney wont be THAT story. Sorcerer’s Apprentice is based on a poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and though pretty true to the poem, this live action take will likely have more of an inspiration on this version. The story will be more involved, it will have a more complex plot and a light hearted lesson learned.

I would wager its still going to be good fun, and still hold some moral values. I am also guessing things will get out of hand much like Jumanji/Zathura with a climax returning all to normal.

Is it still a rehashing of the same old same old story if its inspired by a story told before it was a trendy plot pattern?
