First Thoughts on Hot Fuzz

I absolutely LOVED Shaun of the Dead. It’s one of those films that I keep around my place so whenever someone says “I’ve never seen that” I can be the first to expose them to it. I loved it so much, we showed it at the Films 4 Food Fest. So you can imagine how pumped and excited I was when I got invited to catch a press screening of Hot Fuzz while on my trip down here (I’m visiting LA at the moment for those of you just joining us).

I’ll give my full review next month as we get closer to it’s release date, but here are some of my quick first thoughts.

Up and up, this film isn’t as good as Shaun of the Dead, and to be honest, even though it has some EXCELLENT funny moments, I walked out of the screening a little bit disappointed. That’s not to say Hot Fuzz isn’t a good movie, or a fun movie… it just failed to meet my (perhaps over sized) expectations. The film gets a little too “silly” in parts and often feels like a “spoof” movie (much like Scary Movie or Hot Shots) instead of a creative comedy like Shaun was.

Frost is even better in this film than he was in Shaun and pretty much carries all the comedy.

So will you like Hot Fuzz? Well… if you keep an open mind I believe you will, but you should start lowering your expectations a little bit and just go in to appreciate the film for what it is and not for what you hope it will be. More coherent thoughts next month.
