And the merry Soap Opera of the new Star Trek movie just keeps on moving. Ok, here’s the skinny as far as I’ve been able to discern it. A few days ago LatinoReview broke the story that a good source is claiming that JJ Abrams is off of the new Star Trek project. Then, the folks over at AICN claimed to contact JJ’s people and they said the story wasn’t true… HOWEVER… LatinoReview posted an update saying they were sticking by their story that JJ is indeed off of Star Trek.
It’s pretty much summed up in this:
Seems like, and not long ago, in a meeting somewhere in Hollywood, JJ Abrams was kicked to the curb, or JJ kicked Paramount to the curb, he’s not sure yet, but in the end, JJ Abrams is out of Star Trek XI!
So here’s my pure speculation on this… but I bet it’s true. JJ wanted to take Star Trek in a new direction (which is what I’ve been saying all along they NEED to do because as it stands, Star Trek is dead). Paramount is getting uncomfortable with how many changes Abrams is suggesting, and the two came to blows (well… not literally).
If this is true and JJ is indeed off of Star Trek, then it’s bad news on 2 different levels. First of all, it’s bad that Star Trek would loose such a creative talent as JJ Abrams… but secondly and more seriously it’s bad news because it probably signals that Paramount has decided to stick with the same old dead Star Trek formula for the next movie. I hope it’s not true, but we’ll have to wait and see.
