I simply am a big Joss Whedon fan. I enjoyed the spinoff Angel more than Buffy, and I just LOVED Firefly. Also, being a big comic book geek, I love his work with the XMen titles, and look forward to his new series Runaways.
So to attach this name to a Wonder Woman feature seemed a good fit. He is good at taking female leads, and making them into role models and heroes. Some fans worried that Wonder Woman might be a little “too Buffy”, but I held faith that it was a good call. Apparently Warner Brother’s disagrees.
Yahoo News breaks:
Joss Whedon, who had been developing a big-screen adaptation of DC Comics superhero Wonder Woman for Warner Bros. Pictures and Silver Pictures, parted ways with the studio and production company on the project.
Whedon announced the news on Friday on a fansite, chalking it up to creative differences. “I had a take on the film that, well, nobody liked,” he wrote on www.whedonesque.com. Studio and agency sources confirmed the development.
Obviously I thought he would have done a great job. Perhaps the guys at WB saw his script and decided he wasnt. Maybe WB didnt like it but the fans might have. Who knows?
What concerns me now, is that WB has bought a script from some relative no name writers that involves the Wonder Woman story to take place in World War 2. To me, that is enough to turn me off of this movie altogether.
Oh sure its always fun to watch Nazis get their asses handed to them, and in the original series the Amazons held a tournament to pick a champion to travel to “Man’s World” and fight the evil of the Nazis. That was appropriate since the book debuted on shelves in 1942.
The series hit a reboot in 1987, which moved Diana Prince’s origin story to catch up with modern times. It revitalized the series, and made it far more relevant and marketable.
I honestly don’t want to see a WWII Wonder Woman movie. I would be more than happy to be seeing a Wonder Woman in modern times.
I also hope the rumours of Sophia Bush as the scantilly clad superheroin are true as well.
