Kate Beckinsale has just signed up for the leading role in the new comic book film Whiteout. The good folks over at cinematical.com give us this on her new role:
Kate Beckinsale was in talks for the freezing role in Whiteout, and now she has officially signed on to star as Carrie Stetko in the Antarctica-based action drama.
Here is the plot: Based on Greg Rucka’s comic, the story follows Stetko, who is stationed in Antarctica and is brought into a murder investigation. There are only three days until winter hits, when the continent will become dark and she will be trapped with the killer. So, obviously, she has to haul arse to find out the person, before one of the two gets to play Alive.
The film will be directed by Dominic Sena. Interestingly enough this film is being produced by the same man attached to produce Wonderwoman, Joel Silver, who has a very impressive record. So there are good things going for this film. Built in audience because of the comic, and Beckinsale is a draw for some, now with Silver on board for producing there must be a strong script. This could be a hit for Beckinsale.
I have to wonder if our Kate is getting sick of all of these action roles though. There was a time when she was known for more, she was great in Brokedown Palace and Serindipity as well as a fun little film called The Last Days of Disco.
The girl can act, but she seems to prefer just kicking her way through movies now. Can I understand that? Yes, I loved all of the fight training I had to do in the movie I was in, but it is good to stretch it out with different kinds of roles, otherwise you can get stuck. It seems like right now Beckinsale is running one way on a track, and it’s going to put her at risk for not only being typecast but also for a lopsided ability with acting. Will she be able to do anything besides stand erect and have a serious face if she gets a real acting role?
This film looks pretty good, I have no doubt it will find an audience with all of the good things going for it. But I’m really hoping that Beckinsale will get a few scenes where she isn’t wearing a white or black leather fighting outfit.
