Keanu Reeves will be starring in the new cop drama The Night Watchman. The good people over at movieweb.com give us this:
Fox Searchlight and New Regency will co-finance the drama, The Night Watchman starring Keanu Reeves.
The film is written by James Ellroy; David Ayer will direct and re-write the screenplay. Variety adds the script has evolved since Ellroy started on the LAPD tale right after the O.J. Simpson verdict and the L.A. riots. Reeves plays a cop who’s always done what was needed to solve homicides and crack down on gang violence until he gets a wakeup call and decides he can no longer play the game that made him so effective.
Reeves might actually do ok as The Night Watchman. He plays the bitter guy pretty good, this character will no doubt be quiet and make sarcastic quips which our Keanu is a pro at. As long as he has some someone giving him proper direction this might work out.
The director Ayer only has only directed one other film, Harsh Times, but he wrote U-571, Training Day and S.W.A.T. so the guy knows crime films.
Everyone has their own opinion about Reeves it seems. I think he is hit and miss, often I find him believable and enjoyable to watch and sometimes I find him as flat as the Olson Twins.
Just depends. I think this Night Watchman role might suit him, but I’ll be waiting to see who else is cast before I step in line to watch the watchman.
