Joel Schumacher is not pleased about The Lost Boys 2 being made. The folks over at moviehole.net gives us this on the story:
The veteran filmmaker is apparently spitting chips that Warner Bros have decided to make a direct-to-video sequel to his 1987 vampire fave, “The Lost Boys” ….”I told them to do ‘Lost Girls’ and not do ‘Lost Boys Sequel,'” Schumacher tells RottenTomatoes.com. “There is no ‘Lost Boys’ sequel. All the boys are dead. The Coreys are too old. So what would be the movie? You’d have to make up a whole new set of characters.” He reminds the site that he told “them to do ‘Lost Girls.’ It’d be great. I said, ‘Do gorgeous teenage biker chicks who are vampires. It’ll be great.’ But they don’t listen to me.”
You know what? I’d be pissed off too if all of my movies were being rehashed for money as well. It has to burn to have your creative children cloned poorly for profit. But that’s what happens when your work goes up for sale. Unfortunately it is pretty much necessary to sell your work in this industry, and unless you are very discerning with contracts the studio can do what they want with your movies. Life is about compromising at times, and Schumacher’s films were seen by a large audience because of the same people who are now reusing the ideas. Does it suck for Joel? Yeah, and I’d be pissed off too, but the Warner Brothers isn’t doing anything wrong and in fact they are reminding us all of the fun films in Schumacher’s earlier days.
Will The Lost Boys 2 be any good? I kind of doubt it. The idea of The Lost Girls sounds way batter to me, it would be different, sexy and as a woman it appeals to me. Joel Schumacher is allowed to be angry at a bad remake but at the end of the day since Warner Brothers owns the rights the decision is theirs.
