The Oscars this year is a very mulitculteral place, from Letters from Iwo Jima to Babel, there are many different places and faces that are competing for the golden statue. The good people over at yahoo.com give us more on the subject:
This year’s Oscars are more global than ever including a large number of Britons and Mexicans who have received nominations. Or as Guillermo del Toro, the Mexican director of “Pan’s Labyrinth” said in a recent interview, borders in the film world seem to be disappearing just as real-life borders are becoming harder and harder to cross.
“It is a sort of beautiful contradiction. A world worried about protecting borders and frontiers now has film as the new Esperanto — crossing all borders and being a universal language,” said del Toro. Seven of the 10 contenders for best actress and best supporting actress are foreigners, including best actress front-runner Helen Mirren.
Del Torro brings up a wonderful comparison with his quote, he always seems to speak so eloquently.
Perhaps there is something about the way nations are shutting down physically from each other that inspires the artists around the world to open up creatively. Or maybe the people on the nominations committee, form watching more news each day are more interested in other places besides America.
Or, it could just be that there have been some damned good fine films made in other countries. What does everyone out there think?
