Rodney Reflects on the Oscars

While John and Doug are doing their playful commentary on the Oscars, my wife and I had a different thought.

Commercials.

One of the biggest draws of big events like the Superbowl is these extra special commercials that they pay unreasonable amounts of money to have targeted advertising fed to the teeming masses gathering around their televisions. Its part of the experience of watching the Superbowl. Even the commercials are not to be missed.

Why are the commercials during the Oscars any less important? Let’s face it, the people who go out of their way to watch this award ceremony have to be the die hard movie fans. So we had a thought that could change the Oscar Experience forever. Most of our thoughts included returning Billy Crystal or Steve Martin to the Hosting roster. (My wife has an unhealthy attraction to Steve Martin)

SHOW MOVIE TRAILERS IN THE COMMERCIAL BREAKS.

Make a point of it. Show the big names. Let the studios fight for air time on this exclusive opportunity to reach directly to the movie fans. Show exclusive first looks into the movies you want to be huge this summer! Announce weeks in advance that the first trailer will be shown during the Oscars.

And fire Ellen.

That’s just my two cents worth. I am watching this out of duty from this point on, as this seems to be the worst Oscars in my memory. At least if they were showing exclusive movie trailers in the breaks, I might have something to look forward to.
