Shia LaBeouf is Indiana Jones Jr

Since we love to put any news about Indiana Jones 4 into the “I will believe it when I see it” category, I hesitate to get excited about this for a number of reasons.

Movieweb reports:

Shia La Beouf will play the son of Indiana Jones.

The thing is, we know Spielberg loves La Beouf right now. DISTURBIA became a pet project for The Beard, and it evidently came out well. TRANSFORMERS is a big deal for the company, and a lot of the weight of that falls squarely on the shoulders of Shia. So as much as I pray that there’s no Indy Jr., I’m starting to think that this may in fact be true.

First off, I just dont like the idea of adding a new character that is the unexplained son of the traditional characters of the franchise. Granted there is a significant span between movies, so it is believable that Indy settled down and had a kid, or maybe in his adventurous frollicks, was nabbed with a paternity suit. He is slick with the ladies.

Secondly, the inclusion of such a character almost makes me think they want to pass the torch. Bring in a much anticipated (yet highly doubted) 4th part to a series just to set the pace for a new generation of Indiana Jones Jr?

Thirdly, the Mummy series if oft criticized as being a goofy knockoff of the Indiana Jones formula, and it is rumoured in the upcoming Mummy sequel, that Rick O’Connell’s now grown son will play a significant role. So who is copying who now??

I would have been happy just to see another Indy movie with a good script, an aged Indiana on one Last Crusade… oh wait, one MORE last adventure, and be done with it.

Adding a kid to a tv show usually indicates that its jumped the shark. Can movies do it too?
