Warner Brothers has just bought a second Wonder Woman script. Why? The quality seems far less important than the content. The people over at cinemablend.com explain :
Warner Brothers and partner Silver Pictures have picked up a second script – one not written by Whedon. According to The Hollywood Reporter, WB has no plans to actually produce this mysterious second script, written by Matthew Jennison and Brent Strickland as a spec script. Their script takes place in Wonder Woman’s original setting – World War II, which Joel Silver has stated he has no interest in setting his picture (Whedon is aiming for a more contemporary setting) So why pay money to a pair of newbies for a script that will never be made? Sources indicate that Warner Brothers picked up the script to remove it as a potential future lawsuit.
It seems Warner Brothers is taking no chances with the Wonder Woman movie, if this spec script has anything similar in it to Josh Weldon’s they could have had a lawsuit on their hands, smart move buying it. But it gets me thinking…maybe Whedon is having trouble and they are buying this one as a backup. It would be smart of execs to keep the fans guessing as well having a second script puts a little pressure on Whedon.
I actually really like the idea of a Wonder Woman set in back in World War II, sort of film noir with a strong female lead. It strikes me that having the original time period might lend itself quite well to setting this movie apart from the other comic book movies as of late. I think that if Elektra had been set in the late seventies era in which she was created by Frank Miller the film would have been a much better success.
What does everyone out there think? Would you like to see a WW2 Wonder Woman or will only contemporary do? And does Warner Brothers buying a second script make you wonder about the fate of Wonder Woman?
